Freeman projects strong
revenue growth for Zycron, names Bufano first COO
Chairman, President and CEO
Darrell Freeman, 40, says his Zycron
Inc. IT staffing and
consulting firm will pass the $14 million revenue
mark in 2005, on its way to $40 million in
revenues by 2011 -- by which time Zycron's
workforce is expected to grow from its current 160
FTE strength to about 400, spread
throughout the organization.
The 14-year-old firm -- which has
yet to offshore any of its work -- intends to
achieve its numbers by delivering on a wide array of
staffing, assessment, security, application
development and related services.
"No, we're not going
public," says Zycron's sole investor and founder.
Instead, Freeman explains that his plan is to grow Zycron methodically
by meeting clients' needs and by acquiring smaller
firms. He says Zycron's
growth will assure attractive career paths for
valued employees; and, will enable Freeman and his
family to "give back"
to the community. Freeman notes that Zycron's
successful 1998 acquisition of another
firm's IT staffing
division in Chattanooga, now home to 40 Zycron
employees, has built his confidence in
the acquisitions
component of his five-year strategy. The
Chattanooga acquisition followed Zycron's
decision in 1996 to
abandon selling computer hardware, in order to
focus on IT staffing.
In anticipation of Zycron's
accelerating growth, Freeman recently appointed Mark Bufano to serve as
Zycron's first chief
operating officer. Bufano has more than 20 years
IT experience, with DMR Consulting, Keane Inc., MemorexTelex, Storage
Technology, GE and RCA. Bufano joined Zycron in
January as a Tampa-based area director concerned with
supporting the Florida operations of key Zycron
clients HCA and Federal Express.
Freeman seems
at ease confronting business challenges, and he
values the freedom he now enjoys to accept
challenges far afield
from IT: Freeman and his wife, Gloria, have
created a nonprofit foundation to make
grants to serve needy
families and individuals. Simultaneously, Freeman
is an organizer, director and investor in a new banking
organization, Reliant Bank, which will soon
open its first offices on Carothers Blvd. at Cool Springs
(Williamson Cty.), under the leadership of former
AmSouth Bank Nashville President DeVan Ard Jr.
Freeman, born
and reared in Chattanooga's Jackson Street
community, explains he has been a frequent
volunteer in Nashville
community initiatives since 1991. More
recently, his new charitable foundation and
a spate of other civic
and philanthropic activities reflect his belieft
that "I have not done any of this on my own." He also expresses a
sentiment common in Nashville business: An impulse
to repay Nashville for supporting his efforts, and to
support his alma mater, Middle Tennessee State
University, for affording him opportunities to earn undergraduate
and master's degrees in computer technology and
industrial studies, studies for which he says he was
only minimally prepared while a student at
Chattanooga's vocationally
oriented Kirkman
Technical High School.
Freeman is a member of the Board of
Nashville Technology Council. On July 1, Freeman
will begin his term as vice chairman of the Nashville Area
Chamber of Commerce, and a year later he is slated
to begin serving as Chairman of the Chamber. Freeman's
voluntarism also extends to Boy Scouts, the Center
for Non-Profit Management, Stone Crest Medical
Center (Smyrna), Nashville Downtown Rotary and Psi
Phi Fraternity. He also previously served a term on the
Small Business & Labor Advisory Council of the
Federal Reserve Bank of Atlanta.
Freeman
acknowledges that his volunteer work has required
him to rein-in his passion at times, and to be
more accepting of the
inherently different pace of nonprofits'
decision-making and risk assessment, remembering that only at Zycron is
he the sole investor and chief stakeholder. He is
equally forthright about his commitment to focusing on
such issues as diversity and minority-vendor relationships
in all his endeavors.
He notes that, given his newness to nonprofit
enterprises, he regularly seeks counsel from
executives more
experienced in nonprofits, particularly with
respect to how to advance issues, most
effectively.
The Freemans,
their two sons and two daughters reside in Smyrna,
where Freeman says family time is highly
prized. Already an avid
golfer and pilot, three years ago Freeman accepted
a friend's challenge to run the Country Music Marathon. He has now
run six marathons, finishing his most recent and
probably his last in 4 hrs., 47
mins.
