IT Competition: At CentreSource, Holland says he wants to
leave a legacy
One year after launching his CentreSource start-up into the crowded IT
services marketplace,
25-year-old Founder/CEO Nicholas Holland says he has
"morphed" his company from being a one-man computer and
infrastructure consultant, to serving as what Holland
describes as a "360-degree IT provider" – with a steadily growing team of
professionals who deliver computing support, custom
development and design, IT strategy and asset
management, and information security services.
Despite the
inevitable ups-and-downs of his first year, Holland has
pursued his vision for the company by embracing
off-shore outsourcing, as well as local contractors. He
also has reinvested most earnings into adding staff and
into developing and launching CentreSource's Swirbo e-mail
security service, which Holland insists competes well
with goliath Postini, and others.
Holland
declined to provide current revenue figures, but notes
he projects a 75 percent increase in revenues during the
year ahead. He explained that he has put available cash
back into CentreSource, enabling him to have four
fulltime employees, while keeping "about a dozen"
contractors at work, at any given time. The majority of
the contractors reside offshore. CentreSource clients
are listed here. Key
staff are here.
Advice for other entrepreneurs? The
basics: Delivery on your promises, work smart and long,
turn weaknesses into strengths, hire good people, get
involved in network-intensive Nashville, and put
relationships ahead of sales. Holland also says, "Maybe
above all, new owners must not be afraid to stick to it.
They've got to be tenacious, and resist the urge to
bail-out when things get tough -- for example, by using
the excuse that 'someone offered you a great job', just
because you're afraid to fail and want to avoid that by
saving face. There's nothing wrong with failing, if you
gave it your very best shot," he adds.
Holland, who
says he's been offered at least four jobs in the past
year, says his fascination with entrepreneurial business
and his desire to "provide a service of value and leave
a legacy" in the city in which he was reared keep him
focused on his vision. He adds to that legacy by serving
as current president of the IT Academy at Stratford High
School and a volunteer teacher for Junior Achievement,
as well as being an active member of NTC and its
Software
Developers Roundtable, among other
groups.
Holland double-majored in Finance and
Information Systems at Tulane University, after
attending Nashville's Metro Schools. Prior to launching
Centresource in 2003, Holland was a Senior Risk Analyst
for Reliant Energy in Houston; and, an independent
contractor on IT and business-analysis projects in New
Orleans and Nashville.
