CEO Reginald Holt

MEHARRY MEDICAL COLLEGE today announced the appointment of Reginald Holt as CEO of MMC Ventures (MMCV Inc.).

Holt is quoted on the Meharry website this afternoon as saying, "MMCV, Inc. is focused on building a future where healthcare works for everyone. I am excited to work with the next generation of innovators, leaders, and healthcare providers at Meharry Medical College and around the world who are dedicated to accelerating the transformation of health equity. MMCV, Inc. works with businesses to improve health equity through healthcare delivery and innovation."

A press release this afternoon quotes Meharry President and CEO James E.K. Hildreth PhD MD as saying, "Reginald Holt is the right person to lead MMCV, Inc. into the future, as Meharry Medical College continues to work to improve diversity within the healthcare field, and collaborate with innovative healthcare professionals, entrepreneurs, and companies who are leading the charge to solve big health equity problems across the country and around the world."

The release says that Holt -- a Nashville native and a Tennessee State University business-studies alumnus -- has held "senior leadership positions in managed healthcare, health information technology, and medical devices, both in the United States and South Africa. Most recently, he served as the Head of Medicare Risk Adjustment Compliance with Cigna. In South Africa, he served as CEO of Aberrant Medical Supplies, overseeing a period of extensive growth for the healthcare technology and diagnostics equipment provider." Holt was not immediately available for an interview, according to a spokesperson supporting the announcement.

Meharry CEO Hildreth joined MMC in 2015 and, as previously reported, his influence in medical education and in discussions of innovation and transformation in delivery of health and medical services were further heightened, both locally and nationally, during the worst of the coronavirus pandemic. MMCV has been described since its launch as a holding company that seeks to collaborate with other actors to employ best practices to impact favorably the healthcare provided within underserved communities.

Two years ago, VNC reported here that MMCV's two disclosed initiatives then included a partnership with Ambitna Inc., an early-stage company with a platform designed as a tool for providers to connect patients to clinical trials; and, a joint venture involving with ReCOVer Health that was focused on supporting businesses and schools reopening in the wake of COVID.

ReCOVr's founders then included Turner Nashe, whose past entrepreneural pursuits included Innertainment Delivery Systems, which focused on providing controlled digital content in institutional settings. Meharry has long been regarded as vital to the preparation of U.S. health and medical professionals. Its birth dates to 1876, and it was separately chartered in 1915. Read more here.

MMCV Inc. was initially registered as a Tennessee for-profit entity in December 2020. Its registering agent is listed as Meharry Medical's corporate secretary, SVP and general counsel, Ivanetta Davis-Samuels JD.

A for profit-profit subsidiary of Meharry Medical College, MMCV Inc., said on an IRS Form 990 for FY 2021 that the unit is primarily engaged in miscellaneous financial investment activities, and was during taxyear 2021 associated with $3.7MM in income and-or assets.

MMCV was previously led by a full-time executive during the tenure of Veronica Mallett MD, a long-time Meharry academic and administrator, who left Meharry to become the chief administrative officer of the More in Common Alliance, an Atlanta- and Chicago-based partnership between the Morehouse School of Medicine and Common Spirit Health, which is a nonprofit formed in 2019 through a partnership between Catholic Health Initiatives and Dignity Health.
