The CAD work forNashville's Schermerhorn
Symphony Hall should be 50%
complete by Friday, Aug. 15, according to Paul Scarbrough,
Principal, Akustiks Inc. of
Norwalk, CT; and, Hall construction bidders should get their
first packages in October. Concerts begin in 2006. Scarbrough
told NTC this week that Grozier's Scale Modeling software has
been used by Akustiks (to test the Hall's design); the Hall's
design team employs a Trane tool for
coping with air-handling system noise; and, Insul software
helps isolate sound in the design. The goal? Take every
structural seam, every audience trait into account, to create
the quietest possible space, affording the Symphony conditions
for achieving its greatest "range of expression." Please check
your winter coat, so sound-dampening outerware cannot rob the
room of sound. Tech also shapes Hall's lighting, flooring,
seating.
The Faculty Innovation Profile Project
website is up, promoting exchange of tech and related ideas
with commercial potential. Expect site expansion, September.

Oracle Sales Consultant
Mark Rabne told the Aug. 7th NTC Tech Round Table that Oracle
Collaboration Suite addresses the problem of employees
having "too many places to look for" e-mail, voice mail,
files, conferencing, and other functions. "Employees have
really become the point-of-integration for all the
applications that IT has thrown at them." Rabne and AdviseX
partner Chris Karl gave the NTC gathering an overview of OCS
2.0 capabilities and some hints about 3.0 (tentative March '04
release). Rabne explained Oracle Collaboration Suite delivers
a "universal in-box" and has "the only real-time calendar on
the market"; voice/text translation and search; and, OCS
"migrates organizations from costly proprietary voicemail
services to the OC Suite." The team mapped Oracle's approach
to integrated virus scanning and security, wireless
connectivity, reducing use of e-mail for file-sharing, and
more. Asked how small a customer can be and still qualify for
the $60/person license, Rabne responded, "One." Following the
evening presentation, Rabne told NTC, "Oracle application
staffers are continually balancing a list of required feature
enhancements and will eventually uptake the Oracle
Collaboration Suite in a future version of the E-Business
Suite." During the presentation, Rabne had mentioned
development of applications in response to Sarbanes-Oxley and
HIPAA mandates among priorities vying for development
resources. Analysts' upgrades of Oracle, Adobe lifted
